The Crew

"Holmes Hole Builders has a great group of island craftsmen on the job that have the experience and the skill to properly integrate our cabinetry with all the other interior work. In the office and on the job site, there is always a professional connection to assure questions get answered and details attended to."
Gary Harcourt
Cabinetmaker
Here are some thumbnail sketches of some of the folks you’re hiring when you choose Holmes Hole Builders for your project:

Bob Gray, Site Supervisor
Bob is probably the most experienced homebuilder on our crew, having work for thirty years in the trades on Martha’s Vineyard. He joined the company two years ago, but has already developed a reputation as a demanding foreman and is known for his exacting standards and high expectations. Bob’s extensive experience allows him to thoroughly visualize the complexities of our high-end projects and sort through the myriad challenges that come up. Bob enjoys fishing in his bass boat on the weekends. Two of his sons also work for the company, although they avoid being on his jobs!

Zach Clark, Site Supervisor
Zach is a veritable prodigy in this business. He grew up on his father’s jobsites in Vermont, and has an uncanny ability to translate two-dimensional plan sheets into 3-D in his head, and then to calmly communicate these translations to the men he is working with. Details never seem to escape Zach, and he juggles the demands of dozens of carpenters and subcontractors with aplomb (although he does smoke too many cigarettes). Zach has settled into island life, and plays a mean lead guitar.

Rick Brew, Site Supervisor
Rick joined the team several years ago, bringing mechanical expertise as well as carpentry skills. Rick has worked as a ship’s Engineer on commercial vessels, worked on yacht mechanical systems, and ran the maintenance program at the Black Dog companies for many years. Rick is a hands-on guy who is still learning to delegate, but he is neat, thorough and thoughtful in his approach to construction. He brings a wide breadth of skills to the jobsite, and he is also our own private EMT!

Geordie Gude, Site Supervisor
Geordie is our newest recruit to the management of HHB. And what a find he was! Geordie worked for many years as a supervisor in high-end residential construction in California before moving here with his family a few years back. He is another thoughtful, detail-oriented, highly experienced professional and quickly assumed the reins of a small but intense project on Chilmark Great Pond this past year. Geordie is another of our talented company musicians, and has his hands full with work, kids and his musical habit.

Mike Shabazian, Business Manager
Shabby is a relative newcomer to the office staff. He brings a tremendous depth of experience from the world of high finance, having helped turn around some major corporations throughout the eighties and nineties. He also brings high energy and a great sense of humor to the office, and he wears great cologne! Mike is an avid amateur pilot, and flies regularly with Angel Flight carrying patients to area hospitals.

Jake Levett, Production Assistant
Jake works with Gary on the construction side of the office, and is in charge of purchasing, plan organization, and keeping track of all the communication between Owners, Architects, Site Supervisors and the office. Jake worked as a carpenter and a property manager here on the island before taking his position here at HHB. Jake was born and bred here on the island, but decided to avoid the family dry goods business, and we’re glad he did so.

Carlo D’Antonio, Master Carpenter
Carlo really is an “Old Guy”, but you’d never know it! Always cheerful and happy-go-lucky, Carlo has worked around the Vineyard construction scene for more years than anyone can count, and is known island-wide for his careful craftsmanship. Carlo also worked on the Alabama for a short while, and has been a Holmes Hole stalwart for over four years now. He can be seen sailing his restored Herreshoff sloop Banzai on calm summer days.

Mark Turner, Master Carpenter
Mark came to the company recently with impressive carpentry skills and high energy. He takes a lot of pleasure in both doing an accurate job and doing it fast. Mark is a patient teacher and usually leads a small crew. He is known to have a good time at company parties.

George Moseman, Master Carpenter
George came to HHB with Mark and Jerry, and is simply one of the best carpenters we’ve ever had on the crew. He’s a quiet guy, and seems to get a lot of work done with very little fuss.

Jerry Daniels, Master Carpenter
Jerry is another exceptional house carpenter, willing and able to quietly tackle any challenge thrown his way. He lives out on Chappy, so probably has the longest commute to the job site, but he still manages to show up on time with a smile on his face, even in the height of summer. Jerry’s a little shy, but has had some success finding soul-mates on the Internet.

Ross Adams, Master Carpenter
Ross is a jobsite dynamo, where he works long hours week after week doing any carpentry job with rare skill and efficiency, from frame to finish. He is our New England poster boy with his distinct accent from his native Maine.

Hans Adcock, Journeyman Carpenter
Hans is one of those soft spoke young men who really deliver the goods without throwing his weight around. He takes direction well and soaks up the skills of the trade like a sponge. He is a respected leader and well-liked by the whole crew.

John Rebeiro, Journeyman Carpenter
John is an exceptional man, eminently practical, skilled and hardworking. He has no problem attacking any task put in front of him, from sweeping to framing to trim to cabinetry. John has emigrated from his native Brazil and is raising his young twins here on the Vineyard, although he does miss the warmth of the tropics on some winter days.

Matt Lozier, Journeyman Carpenter
Matt’s laid-back demeanor contrasts with his exceptional abilities in the field. Popular on the crew for his mellow calm, he is also in demand for his skills as a musician. Late nights playing in the local establishments don’t make him much of a morning person, but he still manages to get himself to the site on time and ready to get something done.

Noah Richards, Journeyman Carpenter
Noah and Gary were shipmates for many thousands of miles in the Pacific Ocean, and when he came looking for work two years ago, it was a no-brainer to hire Noah. While he is one of the youngest in our crew, he is widely respected for his calm manner, his meticulous carpentry, and his desire to just do things right. Noah’s two little kids make it tough to get to work early every day, but families are a high priority for Holmes Hole Builders, and we don’t mind a bit.

Frank Raposa, Journeyman Carpenter
Another “Old Guy” (although he really only seems old!), a renowned caulker and shipwright, Frankie brings a serious work ethic to the crew. He’s the first on the job everyday, and his workstation is faultlessly organized. Woe unto those who borrow his tools and don’t return them!  Frank has a shipwright’s eye for aesthetics and a deep knowledge of wood and timber.

Wesley de Souza, Journeyman Carpenter
A hard-working, no nonsense guy, Wes started out six years ago as a laborer, sweeping up the jobsite, and has progressed rapidly and is now a capable frame and finish carpenter. He drives the dump truck, sets up and breaks down staging, wields a framing hammer, or sets baseboard. Wesley works long hours and ploughs through mountains of work. He operates our heavy machinery, such as our CAT telescoping forklift and our CAT skid steer, and he keeps them running safely as well. Wesley is dedicated to his church and loves casting for bluefish in the summer. We call him “Handsome Wes” to distinguish him from the other Wesley.

Wesley Guimaraes, Journeyman Carpenter
Wesley’s can-do attitude has rapidly propelled him from laborer to full-blown framer, finish carpenter and now he is learning the skills of cabinetmaking. Willing to tackle any job thrown his way, Wesley is tough and resilient (although he looks like a kid!) and absorbs knowledge like a sponge. “We’ll get Wes to do that” is a familiar refrain on any project he’s part of. We’ve managed to slow Wes down over the last couple of years, and he only works six days a week nowadays!

Nathan Gray, Journeyman Carpenter
Nathan is a no-nonsense young carpenter who has taken on the challenges of our complex framing with aplomb. He’s a bull of a worker.

Bruce Marshard, Journeyman Carpenter
Also known as The Professor, Bruce has all the tricks of the trade up his sleeve, and possesses a deep working knowledge of tools and machinery. He loves to teach and to debate the finer points of joinery with anyone in earshot. He’s an “Old Guy” who also has a three-year old son and can be seen driving his draft horses on island roads on the weekends.

Tobias Myers, Journeyman Carpenter
Tobias is our Illustrated Man with his intimidating tattoos, but is really a pretty mellow guy. Like all of our younger carpenters, he continues to absorb knowledge like a sponge.

Max Guimaraes, Journeyman Carpenter
Max’s natural ability to focus and to learn, coupled with his easy-going nature make him welcome on any of our projects. He isn’t squeamish about long days or challenging work either. Max is recently married and we all expect to see Mini-Max running around soon enough.

Dave Tierney, Journeyman Carpenter
Dave joined us recently, having worked on the island for many years for other high-end builders. We hope he has found a good home with us here at Holmes Hole because he is a smart guy and a good finish carpenter. Dave is also a well-known fine art painter here on the Vineyard and his work can be seen at shows and galleries during the summer season.

Joe Mendolia, Master Jointer
Joe is one of the best all around carpenters we have ever worked with, and has recently re-joined Holmes Hole as the manager of our new state-of-the-art cabinetry shop. Joe has been around the Vineyard construction scene for many years, turning out high-quality cabinetry and woodwork from his own small shop in West Tisbury. He has a style that is definitely all his own, wears a vest and a broad-brimmed hat all year long, inside or out.

Bill Scott, Carpenter’s Helper
Bill is a real nuts and bolts type, a hard worker who brings youthful enthusiasm to carpentry and often overlooked but still demanding mechanical jobs like appliance installation.

Petr Valach, Carpenter’s Helper
Petr was trained in shop carpentry in his native Czech Republic, and has hit his stride this year working in the field, learning English and new skills and techniques.

Magno De Souza, Carpenter’s Helper
Talk about mellow! Here’s a soft spoken man if there ever was one. First hired as a painter and a laborer, Magno has picked up woodworking along the way. Zach told me that Magno has gotten too smart to sweep up anymore: now he’s needed for his carpentry skills.

Jean Da Silva, Carpenter’s Helper
Here’s another hard working laborer who has turned into a fine carpenter. Recently we discovered that Jean is a natural heavy equipment operator, and is in demand for driving our backhoe and skid-steer loader. Jean is busy with his growing family, but still manages to work six days a week.
