Holmes Hole Builders, LLC has quickly grown to be one of the leading custom homebuilders on Martha’s Vineyard. Working with talented regional architectural firms, the craftsmen of Holmes Hole have produced some of the most prestigious and well-regarded homes on an island where exceptional construction is the norm. We pride ourselves on a reputation for elegant craftsmanship, rigorous scheduling, and scrupulous accounting. We limit the number of simultaneous projects, work with the best and most motivated local subcontractors, and strive to give the client the best possible construction experience.

As you may know, Holmes Hole was the old name, the mariners’ name, for the town of Vineyard Haven. In those days, the village was still a favorite spot for coasting schooners to “hole up” and take refuge from foul winds or tides on their way up or down the coast. When Gary Maynard founded the company eight years ago, he thought it fitting to give a nod to the Vineyard’s historical past, while simultaneously reflecting his basic business mission, which is to provide a harbor of refuge, a safe haven, for clients looking to build a fine home.

Many of our crew are sailors and former shipwrights, and they bring a unique skill set to the field of fine woodworking. Wooden shipbuilding breeds respect for traditional methods as well as the value of innovative tools and techniques. Our experiences refined our knowledge of woods and metals, and in the Shipyard we learned that every detail counts, every hour counts, and only the best shipwrights are worth having on the job. Consequently, with Holmes Hole Builders, you get “Construction with the Eye of a Shipwright.”
